Palin

It has become clearer why McCain choose Palin - it's because she's a Dominionist, that sect of fundamentalist Christianity that openly advocates turning the U.S. into a theocratic state. McCain isn't hoping to woo Clinton voters so much as to activate the Dominionist political machine which had been wary of him, into supporting him. A flurry of recent posts to [info]dark_christian document Palin's Dominionist ties if you want to read up on it - pretty scary stuff. Definitely not someone I want a heartbeat away from the presidency, her inexperience is the least of it.

My husband sat with me for her speech, and near the end of it said, "she's more conservative than McCain." I think that was an understatement.

I respect her for working to be where she is. I do not agree with her in the slightest.

Yeah, that's pretty much my position. I don't care that she's a woman in power, I care that she's a right-wing theocratic lusting lunatic.

Agreed completely. I lurk on Dark_Christian, and for months have been watching McCain too--mostly b/c I disagree with him on many issues. The choice of Palin...scares me. Scares me a lot.

I've heard allusions to this on NPR the past few days. He's certainly secured the wingnut vote, but I believe that he's managed to alienate the independent vote. I also don't think that the Republican base is going to be enough to carry the election by itself... and he doesn't seem to have much left beyond that.

After weeks of vetting his potential vice-presidential picks, Senator McCain was set on his old friend and Al Gore's running mate in 2000, Senator Lieberman.

But 10 days ago Senator McCain was called into a meeting by several of his most senior and trusted campaign advisers.

He was told if he proceeded to nominate Senator Lieberman, who is pro-choice on the issue of abortion, the conservative Christian base of the party would take the issue to the floor of the convention and try to overturn the selection.

Senator McCain was told that without the base he would certainly lose the election.

With little choice, he accepted the advice and re-opened the hunt in a scramble to find another running mate.

Five days later, after one face-to-face meeting with Ms Palin in Arizona, Senator McCain announced she would be his vice-presidential pick.
